About Cabinet and Drawer Pulls

Cabinet pulls have evolved to be much more than just a functional object. They emphasize the elegance of the cabinet by drawing the eye towards the piece of furniture. Selecting the correct pulls can tie an entire room together.

Cabinet Pulls vs Cabinet Knobs

The great thing about replacing old cabinet pulls is that it is a very simple project and can take only minutes to complete. Cabinet pulls are generally more decorative than a simple cabinet knob. Most common cabinet pulls require two holes in your cabinet, as opposed to the single-hole design of cabinet knobs. Another thing to keep in mind is that even though these are most commonly referred to as cabinet pulls, they can be used for a multitude of applications. To help you find the proper pull for your needs, we have broken our large selection into categories of shapes and styles.

Selecting a Finish

One of the first steps in choosing the proper cabinet pulls is selecting a finish. Lighter woods are great when coupled with brass or copper finished pulls, while dark wood cabinets look fabulous with a pull with an iron or nickel finish. As always, personal preference should be the first priority, but common practices are a good foundation.

Types of Cabinet Pulls

Cup pulls are available in a large variety of shapes, sizes, and finishes. There are several ways you can use cup pulls to effectively accent your kitchen. A more traditional theory is to use cup pulls on cabinet drawers, and knobs on cabinet doors. However, it is becoming more commonplace to use cup pulls on the drawers, while placing oversized cabinet pulls on the cabinets themselves. And while cup pulls have traditionally been used for drawers only, more decorators are using them on cabinet doors as well. You will typically want to avoid using two pulls on one drawer. In the past this was standard practice, but today’s focus is on minimalism.

Appliance pulls can be used on a number of different fixtures, including cabinets, but as their name suggests, are most often used for appliances. Appliance pulls feature a longer center to center measurement, making them ideal for items such as a refrigerator or oven. In instances like these, it is better to have a longer pull for the simple fact that it looks more pleasing on a larger door.

Drop pulls consist of a drop handle that hangs vertically from a hook or loop. Many drop pulls can be found with intricate design and detail, something that is prevalent among traditional and Victorian themes. Drop pulls are also available in a more simplistic, contemporary theme. If you are thinking about this style of cabinet pull, consider that the drop handle must be lifted up each time before the cabinet or drawer can be opened.

Flush pulls are different from other cabinet pulls in that they don't have a protruding handle. Flush pulls are best used in sliding cabinet door applications, because they can be hidden away. They are also available in an assortment of themes and finishes, so you can find the one that best complements your decor.

Also available in the cabinet pulls categories are bar pulls, handle pulls, birdcage pulls and several others. If your kitchen needs a quick makeover, replacing the cabinet pulls is most likely the easiest, most effective place to begin.
